Carpet Cleaning Companies Share 3 Things You Should NEVER Do

Carpet cleaning companies can do a fabulous job at getting grimy carpets looking great again, but it’s important to know that your carpet cleaning company can only do so much to keep those carpets looking pristine. A huge part of how your home carpets look is also the result of how you care for them. That’s why today we want to share a few things that you should never do when it comes to taking care of your carpets…

Carpet Cleaning Companies Share 3 Things You Should NEVER Do

1. Use Abrasive Scrubbers to Remove Stains

One thing that many people do without thinking is to grab that kitchen sponge and start scrubbing at a stain as soon as it happens. There are a few problems with this, but for the purpose of #1, we’re going to focus on the abrasive nature of the tool you are using. When you use this type of cleaning tool, you end up with small pieces of sponge and abrasive edging that breaks off and gets into your carpet. You also stand to discolor your carpet because most of these kitchen sponges are colored. Lastly, using an abrasive tool like the scrubbing side of a kitchen sponge is going to ruin your carpet fibers. This means that even if you do get the stain up from the carpet, you’re going to have carpet sections that look different (usually “fluffier” or “hairier”) because of the way the fibers get split and agitated while cleaning.

2. Oversaturating a Stain

It’s not uncommon for homeowners to keep scrubbing and scrubbing at a stain while adding water to the area. This creates a problem because it oversaturates the carpet with water meaning that it’s going to take a long time for the carpet to dry out. Wet carpet causes a few problems of its own -it causes an awful odor and it creates the ideal place for mold to take hold and thrive and once your carpet succumbs to full-blown mold, well, the chances are that you’ll need to get all new carpets.

3. Using Commercial Carpet Cleaners Without Testing Them First

Not all carpets are the same and not all stains are the same. When you purchase a carpet cleaning solution to clean your home carpets you should always select a solution that’s made for your carpet fiber material. You should also ALWAYS test a small unnoticeable section of carpet with the cleaning solution to ensure that the solution doesn’t cause permanent damage to the carpet itself like discoloration or bleaching.
